OK, i'm stupid

Usually i can parse government speak. This, from a story about the Supreme Court dismissing a lawsuit challenging the Bush Administration's initiative to throw more money at religious charities, has me at a loss.
Jim Tooey, formerly head of the White House office, said the ruling is "good news for addicts and the homeless and others seeking effective social services."

"It's also a repudiation of the kind of secular extremism that ruled the public square for decades," said Tooey, now president of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.

What the fuck is secular extremism?

  • Secular extremists are people who believe in the separation of church and state.

  • Hate to be the voice of dissent, but I'd say that secular extremists are those who think that any form of religious belief is a sign of mental delusion and instability.

Daniel Dennet (Dennent? Can't remember) and Christopher Hitchens come to mind as far as well known ones. I run into lessar-known ones on liberal blogs all the time.

  • see, i thought extremism had something to do with behavior.

You know, like this imaginary newscast: Secular extremists in the Durham area today kidnapped half a dozen clergy members of various sects, threatening to "do something terrible" if their demands were not met. When asked what their demands were, the extremists refused to answer. A spokesperson for the group, which calls itself the Radical Union for Secular Extremism (RUSE) was quoted as saying "Well, if your God was so altogether omniscient, why doesn't He tell you what our demands are? Eh? Betcha can't answer that one. Neener neener neener."

Hitchens is merely a demented alcoholic. I wouldn't even think that Dawkins could be considered an extremist, at least as i understand the usage of the term.
