Betting on Michael Vick

If i was an oddsmaker, i'd put the over/under on the first mention of Mike Nifong from Michael Vick's defense attorneys at 11 am Friday morning.

And as a side note, why is this only being covered in the sports section?

  • It's being covered in the sports section because if we put every story about a sports person committing a crime in the other sections of the paper, there won't be room for other news. I recently noticed that the sports section in some paper I was reading has a special chunk for reports on high-profile athletes committing crimes.

Seriously, if this guy were, say, some redneck from eastern North Carolina where I went to high school, would this story be front-page news? Even if he were an eastern NC redneck millionaire, probably not. It's a story because he's a high-profile athlete, not (unfortunately) because he's a dog-fighter and -killer. I'm actually a little surprised (not displeased, but surprised) at the effort being put into nailing this guy.

  • I think you touch on the point that i was trying to make as well, and that is that Vick's defense will almost certainly be based on him being singled out for prosecution because he's rich and famous, and that's why i expect Mike Nifong's name to come up real soon, possibly even as a verb (My client is being Nifonged!).

Federal dog-fighting prosecutions are few and far between; but the fact that this is only a story because the Atlanta Falcons' starting quarterback is involved is more a reflection on the sad state of our media than it is anything else.

The best outcome, AFAIC, would be for Vick to plead guilty, quickly, pay his fine, take his probation, and become a spokesperson for an anti-dog fighting (and anti-animal abuse in general) movement. Whether he's capable of that kind of personal grwoth or not remains to be seen.
