Because he's clubhouse poison?

Union to examine why Bonds has no offers

Because he doesn't make any team he's on better?

Because being under indictment for lying to a grand jury might be a distraction during a pennant race?

I don't know, what do you think?

  • If Barry Bonds wants to know why he doesn't have any offers, he should look in the mirror. He's also disgraced the memory of his father and his godfather.

But you already knew I felt that way. :)

  • I think the job of a union is to look out for the interests of its members, even the unpopular ones. I think collusion against assholes is still collusion. I agree that the "clubhouse poison" and "indictment distraction" are solid enough points that even if there were collusion (I certainly have no idea) it'd be nigh impossible to prove. I think that last time I checked, Roger Clemens was still getting paid by the Astros. And: can't help any team? Three words: Tampa Bay Rays.

  • Bonds committed the, to me, unpardonable sin of putting his own interests above that of his union when he opted out of the MLBPA marketing contract because he could make more money licensing his image to Topps & Upper Deck on his own. Never mind that that money goes to the union to get distributed to all players, even those rookies and bench warmers who are trying to stick around in the majors long enough to make a pension.

Bonds is, AFAIK, the only major leaguer to do that, which is almost as bad as scabbing in my book.

I suspect the union is just going through the motions.

Re: TBR - those guys have the worst management team in the history of baseball, so i'm tempted to think that maybe he could help them. But they're a last place team, and the only reason Barry would play for anyone is to get a ring. He's not going to turn the Rays into contenders all by himself.

  • good point, re: union. it wouldn't surprise me if they were just going thru the motions. also, agreed that bonds is not going to end up in tampa. but even past his peak and off the juice, my guess is he could put up some gaudy numbers as DH for some team. my first guess would be the yankees if they weren't already carrying a washed up ex-juicer on their roster already.

  • Tampa Bay's management has improved. One sign: They have managed to get rid of bad-attitude bears like Delmon Young and Elijah "Hey Wife, Put Up Your" Dukes.

Why in God's name would they want an a**hole like Bonds around the clubhouse?

  • Yes, Chuck LaMar deserves an award as the worst general manager of the last two decades, going away. Thank goodness he's gone now.

Given that my father's from Clearwater, and the Bulls are the farm team for the Rays, I keep getting pulled back into that orbit. But hey, maybe things are going to get better. After all, our congressional representative is going to be pitching for them soon...
