Church signs in the news

Wy couldn't this guy have been in Durham?:
The sign in front of a small church in a small town is causing a big controversy in Jonesville, S.C.

Pastor Roger Byrd said that he just wanted to get people thinking. So last Thursday, he put a new message on the sign at the Jonesville Church of God.

It reads: "Obama, Osama, hmm, are they brothers?"

Byrd said that the message wasn't meant to be racial or political.

"It's simply to cause people to realize and to see what possibly could happen if we were to get someone in there that does not believe in Jesus Christ," he said.

When asked if he believes that Barack Obama is Muslim, Byrd said, "I don't know. See it asks a question: Are they brothers? In other words, is he Muslim ? I don't know. He says he's not. I hope he's not. But I don't know. And it's just something to try to stir people's minds. It was never intended to hurt feelings or to offend anybody."

Because Osama bin Laden represents everybody in the whole fucking world who doesn't believe in Jesus Christ.

UPDATE: Commenter parsnips recommends contacting the South Carolina State Election commission, to complain that this church is in violation of laws regarding non-profits discussing candidates. He/she has thoughtfully provided the SCSEC contact info:

  • Among other things, that pastor is violating his status as a 503(1)(c) tax-exempt organization by using his pulpit and church resources to take a stance on a candidate. I hope everyone who reads this blog will report him to the State Board of Elections:

  • Probably won't help. the church is in Greenville, South Carolina.

  • Then report them to the ding dong SC Board of Elections! It is a federal law they are violating and they deserve to be busted. Why not do some good in addition to calling them idiots? Right now, the Justice Department, under the direction of the Bush administration, is using this law to go after churches that support Obama, for example. Why should the other side be exempt?

  • But I don't know!

Gee. That S.O.B. seems to "know" everything in his Bible, but simple facts like Obama being a fellow Christian seem to elude him.

Reminds me when the kids were little and something would fall off the table and you'd ask 'em if they knew what happened.

    I don't know!

  • Making a connection between two people or concepts due to an accident of rhyme is a rhetorical technique rarely found outside of kindergarten.

I'll bet he also thinks that Hillary is sillery and McCain has no brain.

  • "McCain Hussein...Hummm are they cousins?"

Since I've taken that quotation totally out of context: The quotation is from a site called Crummy Church Signs. More interestingly, the site's owner and frequent submitters not only dislike the Obama sign and many of the signs they list, they're also mostly Xians, as best I can gather.

BTW, I think Mrs. Dependable's relegation of rhyme as rhetoric to kindergardeners and their kind is, well, regrettable and wrong. Both rhyme and alliteration are fun for the whole nation. But meter is sweeter. And remember, "If it does not fit, you must acquit." ;-D
