Dependable Erection

Holy smokes!

Hours before being greeted by the biggest crowd of his campaign, Democrat Barack Obama quietly told a small group of seniors Sunday that Republican John McCain would threaten the Social Security they depend on because he supports privatizing the program.

Fire officials estimated 65,000 packed into a riverside park for a spectacular afternoon rally at a sun-splashed scene on the banks of the Willamette River in Portland. They said an additional 15,000 were left outside and dozens of boaters could be seen floating in the river.

80,000 people at a rally for a presidential candidate? 80,000 people? Are you kidding?

  • Scare the old folks and stay in office. That's the Democrat way. Did he also tell them that by obstinately standing in the way of addressing the problems with Social Security they were ensuring that their grandchildren will never see a dime of it? By the time they're old their own grandchildren will curse them.

  • Locomotive Breath, please go over to Eschaton and explain the problems with Social Security to those people.
I don't think they really understand them.

  • Ya know, let's say John McCain is right only about Social Security and Obama is wrong only about Social Security.

    That stlll leaves everything else.

    Obama '08!

*The "problem" with SS is that it is a 1930's solution that has over-stayed the problem. Retire at 65? Yeah, sure. Back then most working stiffs keeled over at 70. Wow. FIVE YEARS OF BENNIES. Now we have folks living into their 80's...90's and spending way more money than originally intended.

What's the answer? I don't know. But I have a funny feeling that the Republican Party won't be the source of that answer.

I say that because the GOP was against SS in the first place. So how in the heck do you expect that party to place any energy into a social insurance scheme? (except for large corporations, banks and shareholders, of course).

    Just sayin'!

  • I agree with your analysis about SS being outdated. If it ever was "indated" in the first place. It was guaranteed to fail on demographics right from the start.

What's the answer? I don't know. But I have a funny feeling that the Republican Party won't be the source of that answer.

I say that because the GOP was against SS in the first place.

Well that just makes the Reps prescient for recognizing a Ponzi scheme when they see it. The Reps won't be a source of a solution to the SS problem because the Dems have control of Congress and will refuse to do anything about it until it's too late.

In case you forgot, the Reps did try to do something about it but failed because the Dems terrorized all the old folks with "those evil Republicans are going to take away your SS".

When the thing finally goes bust and Dems are forced to do something about it they will choose to deny benefits to those "who have made too much money" even though those are the people who have been funding the damn thing all along.

(And Obama's wrong about lot's of other stuff but we would digress.)

  • What I've recently found out that you've left out, because nobody in the Obama fawning media bothered to report it, is that there was a free rock concert by the The Decemberists.

"Whoa, dude! Like, it's a free concert!"

If you're a candidate and can get someone to do this for you that's an effective campaign strategy. Good for him. But that rather calls into question exactly who was the "headline act".

"Aw, man! Now we gotta listen to some old dude politician."

  • Apparently the following was part of the band's Wiki page that someone quickly edited out and then was replaced late yesterday.

The band has used the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at many concerts.[3] Several anti-Communist opinion writers have attacked the Decemberists, pointing to the band's use of the Soviet anthem as evidence that it endorses the Soviet ideal.

    Here's an example

The Decemberists at Messiah - Soviet Intro (3/31/07)

I guess those birds of a feather just flock together. Or like Jeremiah Wright, will we be told that Obama didn't know with whom he was associating?

I looked up the lyrics just in case you want to sing along

    Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.
Created in struggle by will of the people,
United and mighty, our Soviet land!

    CHORUS:
Sing to the Fatherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.
O Party of Lenin, the strength of the people,
To Communism’s triumph lead us on!

    2.
Through tempests the sunrays of freedom have cheered us,
Along the new path where great Lenin did lead.
To a righteous cause he raised up the peoples,
Inspired them to labour and valourous deed.

    CHORUS

    3.
In the victory of Communism’s deathless ideal,
We see the future of our dear land.
And to her fluttering scarlet banner,
Selflessly true we always shall stand!

    CHORUS

But I'll bet Barry knew them by heart already.
