Mets fire manager Willie Randolph
Well, that took long enough, didn't it? After leaving Willie dangling for about 6 weeks, the Mets unceremoniously dumped him after last night's game.
I don't have strong feelings one way or another about whether Willie was the best manager or not for the team, but oh, my goodness did they botch his firing. Managers are pros. They know when they're hired that it's a short term gig that can end at any time. If the Mets weren't going to keep Willie, which it appears they decided weeks ago, they should have just done it then, instead of dragging it out. One wonders if Omar Minaya will survive this fiasco.

Omar seemed to be pretty honest about the whole thing, pretty much saying that it was "dragged out for too long."
This is a little too sudden, eh? Weird how Bobby Cox has kept his position all of these years. You can't replace someone like that though. He's a great manager (yes, I know-only one title since '91). I think with John Schuerholz still in the big seat, he probably won't leave the Braves until he retires or dies on the field managing.
Apologies for a Braves fan taking away from Mets baseball talk, haha.

i think Omar is in full blown CYA mode. He probably should have fired Willie last October, but having decided to stick with him, he needed to back him up publicly. Once he couldn't do that,, going back to early May, he really had no choice. But he dicked around for another 6 weeks and probably let the season get out of hand.
I can only assume that ownership is too preoccupied with the new stadium to realize what a piss poor job Minaya is doing.
As for the Braves & Bobby Cox, he's the Walter Alston of our generation. Team management is realistic about expectations, and as long as Bobby is meeting them (or exceeding them, most likely) Bobby has the job as long as he wants it. I figure that come late September, the Braves will be within 2 or 3 games of the wild card, while the Mets will be lucky if they're at .500. And Delgado will probably be back in Toronto.
