I'm not sure which is funnier, that the Herald-Sun gave a few lines to a spokesperson for the Workers World Party in an article about the Triangle Green party, or that they also asked John Hood of the John Locke Foundation for a comment. And speaking of the JLF, what's up with everyone over there being named "John?" Are they a front for Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems, or something?

  • Let's not put words in my mouth, Ray. You and i both know that Theresa El-Amin's involvement in the community extends well beyond the Green Party.

Durham is essentially a one-party, Democratic town. It's exactly the kind of place where the Green Party could make a significant impact on policy. Running a smart-growth candidate for County Commissioner, for example, or challenging one of our incumbent state legislatures from the left would be smart moves that could actually have an effect on both policy and politics.

Hooking up with the Workers World Party, who remind me of nothing so much as the Judean Peoples Front, is farcical. They have no impact on local policies. It's debatable whether their impact on national issues is positive or negative.* And to the extent that the Green Party trods that path, they participate in the farce.

*ANSWER, who organized many of the anti-Iraq war demonstrations in 2002-2005, was a WWP splinter group, possibly even a front organization. Even though i participated in several of their events, it was clear to me that many people who opposed the war in Iraq would not, simply because of who was organizing them. One could argue that, by taking the lead in anti-Iraq war organizing, ANSWER actually helped the war effort.
