Memo to Sarah

  • Coming from the guy who lost a bet saying she'd be gone from the ticket in a week this is pretty funny.

By Blogger Unknown, at 1:07 PM

  • Keeping her on the ticket was well worth the beer that it cost me.

In fact, it may have been the best beer i bought all year.

  • There is of course a difference between predicting and wagering. But that might be too subtle for your brain to handle.

Anyway, my electoral predictions were here. In the presidential, i mised North Dakota, Arizona, Georgia, and Missouri (which McCain won by only about 2/10ths of a percent. I wouldn't be surprised if a recount actually made it closer, but since nobody's asked for one, we'll never know.)

I got the NC governor's race wrong.

Depending on the outcome in the Minnesota recount (which Franken will most likely win) and the Georgia runoff, which is up in the air, i could still end up nailing the Senate races.

I called the House to end up 260 - 175. It currently stands at 255 - 175, with 5 undecideds. I could end up nailing that one as well, but at worst i'll be three or four off.

I don't think i did too badly, all in all.

And, to be honest, nothing in the world would make me happier than seeing Sarah Palin as the Republican nominee for president in 2012. And i mean that most sincerely.

By Blogger Barry, at 3:11 PM

  • I have to agree that dancing on Palin's grave is probably premature. I repeat -- my Democratic parents were giddy with the thought that they would have Ronald Reagan -- Ronald Reagan, the B-list actor! -- to run against in 1980. In 1992 the thought that Newt Gingrich would become the face of the Republican Party seemed laughable. And who could forget the Republicans dancing with glee that the Democrats were running a black man named Barack Hussein Obama for president?

Politics have a way of making weird turns. It remains to be seen whether Palin in 2008 presages Quayle in 1992 or Reagan in 1976. Yes, she's dumb as a box of rocks, but so was the most recent two-term President.

By Blogger Unknown, at 4:21 PM

  • that's an insult to both rocks and boxes.

By Blogger Barry, at 4:25 PM

  • Oprah Winfrey now in the mix, according to this breathless item today on cnn.com:

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/11/22/palin.popularity.oprah.ap/index.html

Barry: You might say that Palin's got stoppage time added to her 15 minutes....

(Did you see Cristiano Ronaldo walking off the field this morning? Bah!)

By Blogger David, at 5:26 PM

  • That link didn't publish correctly.

    Whatever.

By Blogger David, at 5:27 PM

  • Cristiano Ronaldo? Oh, dear.

None of the big 4 scored in their games today. 1st time that's happened in nearly 20 years, maybe longer. I was really hoping that Villa could have nicked one in the last minutes against Man U. Especially if Laursen could have headed in off a corner.

The i would have really kicked butt in the fantasy league. At it stands, i held my own, and may have crawled back into the top 5.

By Blogger Barry, at 5:45 PM

  • In fact, it may have been the best beer i bought all year.

I enjoyed it as well. :)

I have to say I was fairly impressed with McCain picking Palin when he did it--not impressed with her, mind you, but I thought that picking a female pro-lifer that was as young and pretty as Mr. Obama was a basically a triple play.

Clearly this was a rather naive assessment of the situation, to put it mildly.

What blows my mind is this seemed to be exactly what McCain was thinking, and he went no further. I can afford to be wrong; I'm just a humble spectator.

Ideology completely aside, we dodged a bullet not electing McCain. The man has no judgment.

  • difference between predicting and wagering

Yeah, in a wager you put down money on your prediction and it costs you something when your prediction's wrong. The one time you actually put your money where your mouth is you blew it.

    Wrong then. Wrong now.

As far as "dumb as a box of rocks".

    1. Wrong (go ahead and call her an "amiable dunce"). Both Reagan and the current Bush were derided as dummies by the deranged left, but somehow they kept getting what they wanted and kept winning elections. How does it feel to continually get your clock cleaned by someone you acknowledge as stupid?

    2. Never forget that it was JFK's "best and brightest" who brought us Vietnam by not understanding how the world works. Give me an average citizen with a little shrewd real-world horse sense over someone with a Hahvard education every time.

  • Obviously Barry isn't for government of the -smartest- or he'd have been pushing for Munger, the only anti-death-penalty, pro-choice, gay-rights candidate on the ballot for governor and quite possibly the smartest person on the ballot for -any- office in NC. I think Barry just doesn't want to be governed by people he deems idiots, is all, and I'm inclined to agree, NC legislature notwithstanding. I can see how one might get these two perspectives confused, but it seems like a simple enough distinction to me.

Oh, and by all accounts GWB graduated by Yale, probably ahead of Kerry in his class.

By Blogger Unknown, at 12:54 PM

  • Can't say as i saw any evidence that Munger wanted to, you know, govern.

By Blogger Barry, at 1:09 PM

  • Can't say as i saw any evidence that Munger wanted to, you know, govern.

For some of us, that's a feature, not a bug.

By Blogger Brian, at 3:30 PM

  • Kind of, um, ironic, when the job you're applying for is governor, but what the hell.

By Blogger Barry, at 4:02 PM

  • Guess you don't play poker very much, do you? Or ever bought a lottery ticket. Sometimes you make a wager for the hell of it, you know?

Give me an average citizen with a little shrewd real-world horse sense over someone with a Hahvard education every time.

    Like George Bush?

Harvard and Yale, as i recall.

Here's a question for you, since you ignored my last one:

Do you come here and embarrass yourself by proclaiming your utter lack of both US and world history because you derive some enjoyment from the process, or is it because you have some sort of compulsion that you're unable to control?

Because if it's the former, i would recommend talk therapy for overcoming this, but the latter will probably require mediation to bring under control.

  • NCReader --

Did you not work out that I was actually agreeing with you?

Look, I'll do it again! I'm sick to death of fellow leftists griping about someone not being "smart" or some such nonsense. Empirically, its a relatively useful concept, and way too often is actually a kind of closet elitism in disguise. I have to restrain myself from smacking people who roll out the whole "nukular" thing again by people who can't pronounce the word "realtor properly. (Hint: if you're saying "ree-li-tor," you sound like an idiot. And most northerners do. It's "ree-al-tor.") President Carter, after all, with one of the highest measured IQ's to ever hold the office, who first widely used the "nukular" pronunciation.

Note to NCReader -- I'm agreeing with you again. Try to keep up.
