Vast left wing echo chamber

Me, one week ago:
I think we need a Constitutional amendment for the "move inauguration up to the Monday before Thanksgiving" option.

Josh Marshall, yesterday:
How much would things be different if Barack Obama had been sworn in on November 5th? The question, to some degree, gets at the very different policy perspectives of Bush and Obama. But at least as much, it points to how much things might be different right now if we had an actual president in office -- one who had some legitimacy, some level of public approval and, most importantly, knew he'd be able to see his policies through years rather than weeks into the future.

It's no one's fault, per se. It's written into our constitutional structure. But though our real and fundamental problems are profound, I think we're paying mightily for having no captain at the helm at one of the most perilous points in our recent national history.

I think when Barack Obama said we can only have one president at a time, he was anticipating that we would in fact still have a functioning president.

  • Too bad we don't have a functioning Congress either.

  • Yeah, it's unbelievable that even after getting their fucking asses kicked up and down the country, Republicans still think Americans want more of their obstructionism.

Must be something in the water they serve at those retreats.

  • The Dems have had a majority in Congress for the last two years. The approval rating for Congress has been dropping and is even more dismal than the President's.

They hold the purse strings. I'm still waiting for the fiscal responsibility they promised. The Reps got in trouble for overspending like faux Dems. We're about to be reminded how the overspending is done by the real Dems.

Now the Dems now have the Presidency and Congress. It's their baby now. Care to predict what the budget deficit will be four years out?

And the Dems have no business complaining about obstruction from the other party.

  • Dude - anyone with half a brain understand that Congress' ratings are low because they haven't stood up enough to George Bush's idiocies.

No, i can't explain why that should be either, but the fact is, that's the deal.

On the other hand, at least at the end of Obama's 8 years, we'll have something to show for our deficit spending. What have we got for the 8 trillion in debt that your team racked up? A new Iraq? A dysfunctional banking system? An out of date automotive industry? Global warming? No pensions or health care for people who've spent their entire lives working to make other people wealthy?

Jesus H. Christ, how do you look yourself in the mirror after you come to my third rate blog and post your moronic bullshit anyway?

  • Congress's ratings are so low because they're a bunch of fuckups. So your prediction is that their approval rating will rise now that Obama's in the White House? All the problems you list were 40 years or more in the making. The comedy around here never ceases.

As a matter of fact there is a new Iraq. Or did you not notice Saddam's necktie party and his evil spawn properly ventilated. Iraqis can wave a purple finger in your direction and have it mean something. In your case it should be the middle one. I suppose stuff like this is depressing to you but maybe you can get some Prozac for yourself.

  • Yeah, Iraq is over. We won.

Fucking awesome. I'm sure that victory will prove as fruitful as the one we won in Afghanistan over the Soviets back in the 1980s. You remember that one, i'm sure. That was when your boy Ronnie decided that funding Islamic fundamentalists (we called them the mujahideen back in the day) was going to be a good thing. How'd that work out for you?

BTW - that wasn't a rhetorical question up there. How do you manage to look yourself in the mirror? Your team has totally fucked up the country going back the past 40 years (as you yourself pointed out.) Once Republicans started appealing to the racists among us, it's been nothing but backward steps. Now, that's all you guys have left: overt racism, intolerance based on narrow religious principles, and outright fear-mongering. I'll be long gone before we manage to get this ship righted again. But at least we've started taking the first steps.

  • Oh, let's review. The Democrats, realistically, have 50 seats plus one dithering wanker in the Senate until next January, and the Republicans have made them get 60 votes to do anything. The House has repeatedly passed good bills, only to see them stymied in the Senate, and that's with the Blue Dogs jumping ship at every sign of trouble.

That's why we tossed 8 more Republican senators out on their asses this year. Keep obstructing, GOP, and have a good time in 2010!

  • Well, in the reality-based Senate, you're probably right, Michael.

But in the Bizarro Senate . . .
