Best song ever

  • I first met this song at a 1993 performance of Twyla Tharp's "Nine Sinatra Songs". Hubbard Street Dance Company was doing this at ADF, and about 1/4 way through this song the couple did a move that made my job drop. Beautiful move. Beautiful woman.

Months later while I was living in Chicago I drove all the way to Aurora to see Hubbard Street do it again. I bought the closest seat I could get.

They had a different dancer, with the kind of hair style that I just hate. Sigh.

  • Barry,

I agree it's one of the best songs ever, but I think Johnny Mercer's version (yes, he's a great singer as well as a great lyricist) of his own song puts Sinatra's to shame. Never understood why Sinatra changed "gentleman's code" to "true to your code." It doesn't even make sense that way.

  • thanks. sorry to say i've never heard Johnny Mercer sing.

i'll have to check that out.

btw - picked up the 1955 pressing of Sinatra's In The Wee Small Hours at the Carrboro record sale today. Can't wait to give it a spin.
