That is true! I was able to do it in about 3.5, and that was with two drivers. We ran into two accidents from CA to NC where 40 E was completely closed and we had to wait for 1 - 2 hours, at a dead standstill, while crash victims were evacuated by ambulance or air rescue.
What I loved about driving x-country was seeing so many states, if only from a car window: CA, NV, AZ, NM, TX, OK, AK, TN and finally NC. I liked OK, AK and TN the best (well, except for NC, which I love!)

I left Albuquerque around 7:30 on sunday morning, and pulled into my driveway around 4:30 this afternoon.

I'm looking forward to the day the hubbie and I aren't working/sleeping completely opposite shifts. Some of my best childhood memories are of driving cross-country, and I'd love to share that with my kids.

I made it from Tucson to Atlanta in 36 hours once (stopped in Dallas for maybe 8 of 'em). And that was solo.
I can't say I recommend it.
But when I'm not in a hurry, driving cross country (especially out west) is probably one my favorite things in life.

My family spent a month driving from CA to NC, and we pulled a trailer behind a station wagon. My mom hated it. I wish I could do that again.

Not true. I've done it in 3 days several times, both from LA and once from San Francisco. One of those days will, however, be a truly long sit behind the wheel.

Didn't mean to say that it couldn't be done, especially since i've done SF to Durham in 3.5 days on more than one occasion.
Rather, that it shouldn't be done, as it's really a waste of good travel opportunities. There's no time to do anything worth doing.
