So these guys were doing the community a good deed by picking up just about anything that was recyclable once a month.
So, where'd they go?

I don't know why, but I did previously hear that they were discontinuing service. Pure speculation on my part, but I've heard that recyclers everywhere are generally in trouble because the demand for raw materials, particularly in China, has cratered.

I spoke with someone at the last Whole Foods recycling day, and they said that Philco had lost the lease on their storage and sorting facility, and were having to find a new location. I don't know if that's accurate, though. Certainly a collapsing market won't help them get a new lease.
FYI, I don't think they took styrofoam anyway, unless maybe it was already formed as packing peanuts.
This is a place where I think municipalities ought to do more: most any kind of recycling is going to be cheaper in the long run than landfilling the stuff. or incinerating it.

I brought styrofoam to Philco on more than one occasion. I did find a place up near Creedmor that takes the styrofoam slabs. The rest of my stuff is going to end up in the landfill, i'm afraid, unless anyone knows who'll take old vinyl gutters, for example.
