Blue Cross Blue Shield

Those fucks.

Looks like they're spamming their mailing list with pre-printed, pre-paid postcards (hey, it's not a bad technique. I've used it before) to Senator Kay Hagan, urging her to oppose meaningful health care reform. There's some suspicion that if they are indeed using their customer base as a mailing list, they're in violation of some law or other. But they run the risk, as the NCGOP did the other day, of giving the other side a means of getting their message across.

>Here's Mrs. D's response to BCBS:

Did you get one of these? How did you respond?

  • Mrs. D has become one of my favorite people. Kudos!

  • I responded by throwing it in the trash...now i'm mad because I didnt think of altering. And i'm in a funky place because i have BCBS coverage...lol

In a related incident...I recently received a letter from a company that works with BCBS to help them lower their costs and save "me" money. They noticed that I recently have been receiving medical care that indicated I may have had an injury.

In order to help save "Me" and them money, they wanted to survey where i got hurt, including on the job, in a commercial establishment, or on another persons property! They even wanted contact info and insurance info for them! I was appalled.

But it really shouldnt surprise me.

  • @Vera - I think another blogger posted recently that he received a *phone call* from that company. Seems to me that wouldn't comply with HIPAA.

  • Well I didn't get one, and I have BCBS. Though that may have something to do with the fact that my employer and my health insurance are technically in Maryland.

  • My postcard from BCBS went straight into the recycling. Though I have been know to use postage-paid cards/envelopes to tell companies to take me off their mailing list. (Wouldn't have worked in this case, though.)

  • I think that Mrs. D started a trend...

Durham For Obama has sent out an email with the following suggestion:

Most of you already know that Blue Cross just sent a mailer out to its policyholders here in NC that includes a printed, pre-paid postcard to Senator Kay Hagan that opposes the Public Option. In response to this outrageous use of their customers' premium dollars, we're asking you all to take two actions:

    1. If you received this mailer from BCBS, please mark out in RED the words "Oppose government run healthcare" and write in RED "SUPPORT THE PUBLIC OPTION," mark out in RED "doesn't need" and write in RED "NEEDS." Then put the postage pre-paid revised card in the mail and call Senator Hagan's office to tell them that you have sent the Blue Cross card but in support of the Public Option.

    2. Please join us at 11:00 on Friday morning at the BCBS headquarters to protest their greedy campaign against health care reform. We'll bring our Crime Scene yellow tape and a blown-up version of the postcard, have fun, and send a message to Blue Cross and to Washington that we are going to get health care reform in 2009 that serves our interest, not the insurance industry's.

  • DAMN, I have a couple of appointments Friday morning or I'd love to go to BSBCNC to hurl a few invectives.

Heard on WUNC today a very brief report simply noting that these postcards had gone out following notices of an 11% rate increase. I haven't gotten my rate increase yet; I get one every year so I guess I have that to look forward to.

  • Mine went in the trash too, after a loud hmph. I truly wish I'd thought of this....Mrs. D is a genius. As a side note, my insurance costs went up 30% this year and the hubby's went up about 20% (both BCBS).
