  • It bears only a nodding resemblance to the original...there's a village, and a #6 and a #2, and a lot of paranoia, but that's about where it ends.

Sort of like when I made Thai Chicken Pizza and Barry said "This is OK. Just don't call it pizza."

  • I think what i like about it is that they didn't attempt to remake the original.

Obviously as a 6 episode closed story arc, the pacing is going to be different than the original, which as almost al series were at the time, was open ended. If Magoohan hadn't run out of ideas, or if the ratings had been better, it could have run for two or more complete seasons. There was a cowboy episode set out of the village that, in sequence on the box set, is Episode 15 i think. That was a potential second season opener, which supposedly would have established that "The Village" could be anywhere, but that the Prisoner would always be in it.

Of course, the success or failure of the current series will depend on the resolution. To the extent that i want to tune in tonight and see it the series is so far successful.

  • I adore the fact that the original series was a short, concise 18 episodes. The western episode is possibly one of my favorites, and think the short season ended pretty well.

I have always loved a few key things about it: the opening sequence, the pennyfarthings and "be seeing you", and most of all, the changeability of it. the fact that there was only one constant character, no identities, no repeated characters save number 6. number 2 only repeated once, and he was the final episode.

    anyhoo...innovative and creative

  • In the original, none of the characters other than #6 had back stories--and his was very sketchy, mostly just the opening sequence. And if I recall, there were no children in The Village. And everyone was just so gosh darn cheerful all the time, and wearing ponchos and carrying umbrellas. It was these oddities that made for the overall creepiness of The Village, and which made #6 more seem more isolated. In the new one, there's nothing particularly quirky other than the pink A-frame houses. The repeated characters with backstories and children make for a more "normal" milieu, IMHO. There were other fantastic elements, but they weren't things I associate with The Prisoner (e.g., the whole dreaming-is-reality meme, the distant towers, the doppelgangers, the holes).
