Anti-climax

Hey, Durham?

There are a lot more people watching your fireworks display than can fit in the DBAP.

Maybe it's time to think about them for a change?

Just sayin'.

  • I've seen better fireworks shows after Bulls games, holy christ. And the finale was two booms long! Disappointing would be an understatement. But, it was exciting to a 3.5 year old, she didn't know any better!

  • Glad to hear the little one enjoyed it.

  • Yeah, that was really poor last night.

I was wondering if there are some limitations due to how/where they're launched that prevent them from using more powerful fireworks. The fireworks there usually are launched specifically for Bulls games, so it could be they're just not equipped to shoot higher above the stadium.

  • I've always thought fireworks in a ballpark was on the "enjoy it until someone gets killed" list - sitting in the lower bowl on the right field line not 100 feet from the pyro rig, I felt like they were probably pushing the limits of what can be safely done. My wife got beaned in the shoulder from a cap, or something else hot and travelling quickly.

If you want the "holy crap" kabooms, you need the rig on a barge over a body of water. Not happening in Durham. Go sit in traffic over in Cary for that.

  • Although the display was advertised as being free to the public (free admission to the ballpark after the 7th inning), in reality the game was sold out, and no one got in who didn't buy a ticket.

Not sure where the best place in Durham is to have a fireworks display. Used to be in Wallace Wade Stadium on Duke campus. You could fit everyone who wanted to watch, but the traffic getting in and out of campus was pretty messy. There was one year when they did it at Durham Central Park, and i thought that worked well, but i could see issues cropping up eventually with safe distances between the show and the crowd.

Before the DPAC and DiamondView were built, they used the empty lot as a staging area, which worked well, and gave everyone from Ramseur St. north a clear, unobstructed view. That's good, because it means you don't have serious traffic jams leaving downtown when the show is over.

The current arrangement doesn't work, though.

  • When I was a kid, the big local fireworks display was always at Carter Finley, in Raleigh.

Maybe Durham ought to evaluate using the soon to be remodeled Durham County Stadium, unless the proximity to Durham Regional causes issues.

Traffic, at the least, would be easier to manager on Roxboro/Duke than around Duke's campus.
