  • With regard to that Patterson Rec Center number, I've got to assume from the demographics that that's dominated by the Lasalle/Campus Walk complex of Duke upperclassman/grad student housing. Given that, the only way I can figure 17% turnout is if that group disproportionately voted early, which as I understand it, wouldn't show up in those turnout numbers.

  • According to Durham BoE:

    Precinct 5
    Registered voters - 4,196
    Voted in precinct - 466
    Voted absentee - 214
    Total voted - 680
    % voted - 16.21%

lowest percentage turnout of any precinct i town. Absentee ballots includes early votes, as i understand it; the total of absentee votes (25,984) matches the total of One Stop votes (13,015 + 5,603 + 6,314) plus absentee mail votes (962). It's possible that mail votes disproportionately came from that precinct, but there were fewer than a thousand of those county wide.

I'm guessing that with no national race on the ballot, the local races weren't enough to generate interest from people who largely come from other places.
